This roasted red pepper hummus is way better than store-bought hummus and you can make it at home for a fraction of the cost! You are going to love it!
This roasted red pepper hummus is hands-down my favorite hummus of all time. I love the spicy kick of Sriracha and the fresh taste of the red bell pepper. My KIDS even love this dip. They dig in as if it were nacho cheese dip but it is SO much healthier. I mean, really, you can get your kids to eat garbanzo beans… and LIKE it! Crazy, right?
Don’t get me wrong, I love store-bought hummus. You can’t beat the ease. But if you have an extra 5 minutes to spare, you CAN beat the price. They used to have this spicy hummus at Costco that was my FAVORITE (I haven’t seen it there in ages). I think it was around $7 for the container. It wasn’t a way big container and this recipe probably yields about the same amount. This is what gets me. You can make hummus for literally a fraction of the price! After pricing everything out, I spent $1.50 to make this. That included me pricing out each little ingredient. I got the beans at Winco on sale for $.50 and the bell pepper was about $.75. I figured all the other ingredients added up is maybe another $.25 (that is being generous).
The time commitment to make hummus is hardly anything. If you buy roasted red peppers from in the jar (see below), it takes even less time. You can literally make this in 5 minutes. You can have this made in the same amount of time it takes you to walk from your Costco parking spot to where you would find the hummus on the shelf.
Roasted Red Bell Pepper:
I love roasting my own red bell pepper because it is cheap and easy to do. If you don’t have a lot of time, you can buy roasted red bell peppers at the grocery store that are roasted and ready to go. You can usually find them in the condiments aisle in a glass jar.
If you go this route, you will want to use about 1/2 c. of the peppers. Drain them well as they may add too much liquid to the hummus, making it on the runny side. If this happens, just process in more garbanzo beans to thicken again.
There are so many ways you can go with this hummus. You can add a little curry and cumin to give it more of an Indian flair (so good). If you want it to taste more like a Mexican bean dip, you can add a little taco seasoning. If you aren’t a fan of Sriracha but still like a kick of heat, try adding some Tabasco sauce. You can’t go wrong here!
This hummus is naturally gluten free! Obviously, you just need to watch what you are dipping in it. GF pita bread is always an option but the better taste route is probably just using GF chips or crackers. Costco has SO many great options. I love the “Milton’s” GF chips and also the “Food Should Taste Good” chips. Both go great with this roasted red pepper hummus.
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
Ingredients (with Amazon Links)
Broil red peppers for about 3-5 minutes on each side until charred and blistered all around (you can also do this on the grill).
Carefully remove from oven and immediately tightly wrap with foil. Let stand for 20-30 minutes.
Peel skin from pepper and remove stem and seeds.
Place roasted pepper, garbanzo beans, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil in a food processor or blender that can process dips. Process until smooth.
Place hummus in a dish and add a little Sriracha to the top (optional). You can also spoon over a little extra olive oil over the top if you would like.
Serve with warm pita bread, flat bread, pita chips, or vegetables.
